AKA Tuscan Kale. A wonderfully elegant vegetable packed full of vitamins and goodness. Traditionally used to make Ribolita Toscana, a traditional dish of Florence and is also an ingredient in Minestrone. Scrumptious when pan fried in a little olive oil with pancetta or bacon, and garlic. Or, strip the leaf from the mid rib and gently stream, toss with a little olive oil and pine nuts and serve with pasta. Easy to grow and Cold Hardy. Annual. Download sowing guide
- Sow April to June or in early autumn
- Lightly cover with fine compost and gently water
- Cover to retain humidity and remove cover once seedlings emerge
- Temperature requirement: 18°C plus
- When large enough to handle transplant to 7cm pots and gradually harden off and transplant to growing site when all danger of frost has passed.
- Harvest leaves as required from the bottom and always leave some green growth for continual harvest
- Remove any flower shoots that appear whilst harvesting but at some point leave some to flower for the pollinators
- Keep weed free and protect from slugs, snails and cabbage white butterfly
